Foreign language education, and more specifically, in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), innovation has been placed at the core of any improvement brought into the language classroom. Despite its many definitions, innovation is generally defined as the pedagogical attempt to bring about educational improvement through the implementation of new or different techniques (Carless, 2013). Innovation may be applied by making explicit changes to teaching materials (primary innovations) or changes at the level of methodology (secondary innovations) without changes in the primary innovation. Likewise, the materialization of innovation in the EFL classroom has extended to all levels, but a special focus has emerged in Higher Education (see Makewa, 2019). The advent of COVID-19 has generated a wealthy body of didactic proposals and empirical research in which innovation has been central, be it through ICT tools (Bener, 2021) or introducing methodological changes to make the process of learning and teaching more student-centered. As mentioned previously, Higher Education has not been exempt from these changes. More importantly, the role of innovation in the lessons addressed at future Primary and Secondary teachers within undergraduate and graduate studies has become more relevant. Thus, the aim of this symposium is to provide an overview of the pedagogical research in Higher Education in these contexts.
