Maria Parappilly OAM is a Professor of Physics at Flinders
University and a passionate advocate for advancing women in STEM. She
received her Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of
Adelaide in 2006. Maria leads the Australian Government WISE grant
funded STEM Enrichment Academy to support increased participation of
girls and women in STEM.
Maria is making physics accessible, researching the effectiveness of
various innovations she implements, most innovations have been
evaluated, disseminated, and published and have had a global impact. Her
teaching excellence and influential leadership have been recognised with
numerous awards, honours, and fellowship including, being awarded a
Medal of Order of Australia in 2020 for her service to science education
and women, being named as The Advertiser Woman of the year- Top
Innovator in 2019, being elected as a Fellow of Australian Institute of
Physics (AIP) in 2018, receiving the AIP Physics Education Medal for
outstanding contribution to physics education in Australia (2018), being
awarded the international D2L Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning
by STLHE Canada (2017), being named as the South Australian STEM
Educator of the year (2015), inducting into South Australian Women's
Honour Roll (2017). In 2021, The STEMEA has recognised as a finalist in
the STEM inclusion category of the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes- the
'Oscars’ of Australian Science.
Maria was formerly the STEM education research head at Flinders, and the
chair of the physics Education group of the AIP. She shares her
expertise on national, international physics education and course
accreditation committees. Her research also shares ways to interest
girls in STEM and enrichment interventions.
